Shepparton Badminton Association
Our History
The earliest records indicate badminton in Shepparton started in 1928 and was played until a lapse during the second world war. After the war interest in playing badminton resurged and the Shepparton Badminton Association was formed on the 24th of April 1951 with three teams - Methodist’s, Scots, and St. Augustine’s.
Over the years the association has had thirty-seven independent clubs and over eighteen stadium-based clubs playing in its competition. The matches were played in a home-and-away format at each club’s home hall. These were very entertaining times with entire teams often traveling in one car, sometimes quite a distance, and, treated to elaborate speeches and suppers.
Some of the halls were too small to accommodate the full-size courts and baselines were drawn up the walls! This, along with ceilings of varying height, and the Scots hall having rafters, made for some very interesting games.
In 1972 the decision was made to move all play to the Shepparton Sports Stadium. This led to the eventual demise of all the small clubs and by the 1990s the SBA had become essentially one large club.
